When you come to Sanremo, you are attracted by a marvelous landscape: The mountains in the background, hills sloping down to the sea, a lovely town in the center of a bay, wonderful owers and tropical vegetation. Sanremo was founded by the Romans in the 4th century A.D who left us, as their witness, the magnicent Roman villa called Matutia a typical Roman residence by the sea. In the Medieval period the higher part of the town called “La Pigna” was built. Protected by high walls and gates to defend the population from the Barbaric Saracens(in the 9th century A.D)
The mild climate, the abundance of natural resources and the warm welcome by the population attracted a lot of people from Northern Countries. They came to Sunny Sanremo to spend the winter season. Famous and important artists and scientist have come to Sanremo. Evidences of this can be seen at The Nobel Villa in splendid Liberty Style, where the famous scientist stayed at the end of the 19th century who created the famous Nobel Prize and the magnicent Russian Church which was donated to Sanremo by the Russian Empress Maria likes sports, Alexandrovna at the beginning of the 20th century, together with the palm trees which are a symbol of the town.
In fact the name of Sanremo became famous all over the world mostly for its association with the production of owers thanks to the perfect climatic conditions, you can admire beautiful parks, Art Nouveau gardens and tropical vegetation (palm trees, cacti and owers). Apart from the production of owers, Sanremo is well renowned for the touch of glitz oered all year round in the gaming rooms of the Casino and by the annual event of the Italian song festival (held in February).
